My first attempt to Crochet

I always wanted to learn how to crochet.  When my SIL was pregnant with my nephew 5 years ago I wanted to make a blanket for him.  I never got around to it.  So here I am 5 years later and learning on my own.  I went to the store yesterday and bought needles, yarn and some instruction guides.  I started yesterday and while I am not very good, I know practice will make perfect.  I just have to find a way to hold my fingers better.

My main reason for wanting to learn is to give me something to do when I am admitted.  I want to make a poncho for my mom for Christmas and a scarf for my SIL and step mom.  I figure I have 10 months to learn and get "good" and even if they aren't perfect they will be from the heart.

If I ever finish the first few lessons and they look ok I will post pictures :)  So you can all follow me in my attempt to crochet!!!!

  4. What's the difference between crocheting and knitting?

  5. Kelly I am not sure the difference...except there are 2 needles with knitting and only one with crocheting. I don't trust myself to be able to figure out 2 needles yet LOL!!!!

Thanks guys, ahem gals...I went to youtube and it was SO much easier watching someone how to do it! I made my first single crochet and it looks dam good for a beginner (IMO of course).

    1. Amy and Kelly,
Crocheting is done with a "hook", and you work with one "hook" or "needle". With knitting, you work with 2 needles and the needle is inserted into the yarn that is threaded onto the other needle. I don't know if I made sense, but basically, knitting is done with 2 needles, and crocheting is done with 1 hook.
      Hope I helped!

  6. start with some basic washcloths and have fun! Youtube is a good resource, also you may want to sign up for ravelry, a free knitting and crocheting resource with TONS of patterns, links and such.

Crocheting would be a great help when admitted, it gets easier as you go and at some point can be a comfort when you're upset, a way to relax when you're stressed and you can accomplish something while stuck in a bed doing treatments.

I loved your posts about Jenn. I'm a knitting mom of a cf-kid named Joey, 9 yrs, and found Jenn through ravelry and followed her blog for only about a year. I'm so glad you two got to meet and to say goodbye to Jenn.

If you get stuck in the hospital and in need of yarn, holler (or email) and I'd be happy to send some of my extras your way! I've got a stash that's taking up more room than my children.

  7. LOL Thanks Christine!!!

I did sign up for that site and am waiting to get my invite :)

I've started with the basics learning the different stitches and I "think" I have the single crochet down pretty well...next is double!!!!!!

  8. I have been wanting to learn to crochet or knit for years. My grandma did both and was teaching me to crochet when she died, though I always loved the way the knitted stuff looked better. You, along with the various other CFers who love crocheting and knitting, have inspired me to try. Today I got the stuff to learn to knit. We are on a journey, Amy. A JOURNEY. :)

  10. Yay for you! I really like knitting and crocheting. I am trying to figure socks out and not getting much of anywhere. A really good book to start off with is The Idiots Guide To Knitting and Crocheting. The instructions and pictures are really good and they have some really nice beginners patterns. Have fun!
